Leather. Faux leather. Fabrics - Genuine quality.
- Sew it once, enjoy every summer. -
Look at the fibre content, weight and finish listed for each fabric. For seat pads that get daily use, a heavier, tightly woven outdoor upholstery fabric holds its shape better. If you need full protection from rain, choose a coated, waterproof outdoor fabric rather than a simply treated one.
A water-repellent fabric lets drizzle bead up and roll straight off. A UV resistant fabric slows down fading on a south-facing patio. Many qualities also dry fast, which matters after a typical April shower.
Marine fabric has to cope with spray, wind and long hours of sun, so pick tightly woven, lightfast qualities for cockpit cushions and boat covers. In a caravan or motorhome, outdoor textiles make hard-wearing campervan cushion fabric that copes with condensation and sandy feet. Awning fabric in the right width also works for shade panels on the side of your van.
Brush off dry dirt and wipe marks away with lukewarm soapy water. Let everything air-dry fully before you store it in the shed or the van locker. When rain stops beading, refresh the finish with a textile proofing spray.
Most outdoor fabric is woven from synthetic fibres such as solution-dyed acrylic or polyester. Some types also have a PU or PVC coating for extra protection against rain. These materials cope with moisture and sunlight far better than cotton or linen.
Yes, and it is a smart choice for kitchen bench cushions, children's rooms or a dog bed. Spills wipe off easily and the colours stay bright near sunny windows. Softer acrylic qualities feel close to a normal furnishing fabric.
Mould grows on dirt and trapped moisture rather than on the synthetic fibres themselves. Bring cushions in or stow them somewhere airy during long wet spells, let them dry completely and brush off leaves and pollen regularly. A quick-drying foam filling helps as well.
Yes, outdoor fabric is a practical choice for dinette seats and bunk cushions, as it handles condensation and damp better than standard furnishing fabric. Use the old covers as a pattern and choose a soft, tightly woven quality for comfort on longer trips. Check any fire-safety requirements for interior upholstery in your vehicle before you start.
Use a strong polyester thread, ideally one labelled UV-resistant, as cotton thread weakens in sunlight. Pair it with a size 90 to 100 needle and a slightly longer stitch. On coated fabrics, clips work better than pins because pin holes stay visible.
